  1. Updates from the Chair:

a. A list of all reports in response to McHale was distributed.

  1. Approval of meeting minutes unanimous
  2. Public Policy: Social and Behavioral Sciences Perspectives Minor
    1. Guest: Don Haurin, Economics
    2. Approved: 1 abstention
  3. ASC 700 – committee agreed to put vote on hold until course author can attend and respond to questions: Why is this being proposed as an Arts and Sciences course instead of a departmental course that is cross listed?
  4. CCI recommendations to ASC Faculty Senate regarding the McHale report discussed:
    1. NMR – question as to why rename the GEC, name should be positive in nature; recommended keeping name or matching other institutional programs with names such as General Education (Gen Ed)
    2. Decrease in category requirements – look at differences between B.A. and B.S.

                                                               i.      5 fewer Natural Science credits - 2 Biological and 2 Physical Sciences recommended as requirement with one lab required

ii.      5 fewer Social Science credits – no

iii.      5 fewer Humanities credits – no

iv.      Senior capstone – should be kept in the major; reaffirm and fund the original 597

                                                             v.      5 fewer hours in exemption from one course – suggested: select a substitution for all students as long as courses are equally challenging; discussed keeping “drop a GEC option” for B.S. students and a general desire to explore how this might help students not currently provided this option

    1. Clusters – general like for idea, but concerns for budgeting; pilot (3-4 years) 4 clusters of different configurations to be offered to Freshmen and Sophomores; favor a credit-for-credit approach instead of offering 10hours of released credits; English 110 should not be part of clusters; Ed Adelson will provide more information to be discussed further
    2. Freshman Seminars – should remain the same
    3. Other concepts discussed:

                                                               i.      Baseline GEC that can be built on across the University

ii.      Pass/fail one or two GECs – would encourage students to take chances in non-threatening way; a small group should be formed to write up a proposal including Dave Andereck and John Wanzer
