Discussion of Arts and Humanities GEC category
Present: Petry, Mockabee, Mercerhill, Florman, Fox, Thompson, Palazzi, Ward, Wyszormirski, Gill, Tupman, Harned, Thompson
i. New numbers now 482 & 682
ii. 2 separate syllabi will be sent
iii. Syllabi - #1 & #3 on page 3 – change “grade will drop by ½” to 1/3; disability statement should be 16 pt font
iv. Course request will come back to committee on the 16th
i. Suggested that course description read “Provides a rigorous opportunity to view, discuss, read, and think about contemporary dance and its history through the study and practice of criticism.”
ii. #4 on GEC rationale: remove “In my view”
iii. #6 on GEC rationale: History of Modern Dance is not on syllabus objectives – remove from rationale
iv. Assessment
1. remove grade determination
2. add embedded test questions and where data will be housed
v. Course request rationale – “driven by research interests of instructor” change from instructor to proposer
vi. Syllabus
1. Grading % - does it include reading response forms for all readings?
2. grade should drop by 1/3, not by ½
3. add “no prior knowledge of dance assumed” to course description
i. Remove page 2 & 3 of syllabus and make into a separate document for GEC rationale
ii. Page 7 – there is no official OSU grade scale, replace with “Use the following grade scale”
iii. Page 8 – remove “Official OSU” from grade scale
iv. Provide rubric that will be given to students – this can also be used in GEC assessment plan
v. Page 9 Resources – “They provide excellent You…” typo
vi. Title of course – discussion of appropriate title – committee would like to see title that reflects focus on tv programs. Possible title: “Criticizing Television: Social Reflection and Analysis”
vii. Review survey to make sure it is going to meet course assessment needs
i. Is there a way to combine Cultures & Ideas with VPA?
ii. Discussion of reduction of credit hours and flexibility
1. potential proposal from CCI to decrease requirements to:
a. Social Science – 10
b. Arts and Humanities – 10
c. Natural Science – 15
d. Students must take additional 10 hours within these categories
