Notes

Present: Childs, Bitters, Tebben, Kehres, Lowry, Renker, Jacobs, Seloni, Wang

 

1. Meeting minutes from April, 3rd - approved.

 

2. Announcement: College of Humanities Annual Meeting will beheld on Friday. Bill Childs will present 5 minute report on what HUM CC has been doing.

 

Some of the points that Bill wants to make in the presentation:

  • List the members of the committee.
  • Note the highpoints of Steve Fink’s reign as chair:  Revisions to African American major; approval of World Literatures Major.
  • The number of courses that have been approved.
  • Routine items done via e-mail.
  • Notable achievements: acceptance of Spanish 367 course.  It might become a model for others.
  • Some other items will be added (e.g., courses involving more than one college).

 

3. Korean 251- approved with suggestions

Suggestion: Students whose native language is Korean might be excluded.

The committee members asked if the proposed remedy is going to work.

Although the committee has no objection, they were wondering whether it is going to be effective.

 

4. English 789 and English 889- approved with contingency

College of Arts ought to be consulted- Concurrence needed from the College of Arts.

 

5. Women Studies 230- approved with contingencies; resubmit the request for GEC credit and include the rationale for committee review

a. Ask them to resubmit the form that should have been attached. They need to follow the guidelines.

b. They do have VPA, but they do not mention Social Diversity. Do they want to pursue it for social diversity?  If they intend this course to be Social Diversity, they need to submit their rationale.

c. There is a significant writing component in this course so, prerequisite needed-English 110.

d. They do not mention the Popular Culture minor. Can this course be added to Popular Culture minor?

e. Please put the course number (230) on the syllabus.

 

6. Update on McHale

a. Comments by Nina Berman on the current “Cultures and Ideas” category were reviewed by the committee. Committee members liked the direction they are going. Bill will email member’s comments to Nina Berman.
