  1. Meeting minutes from May 1 approved.

  1. Course requests:
    1. Classics 250 revisions - approved

  1. McHale discussion
    1. Provost asked faculty to provide rationale for whatever decision is made regarding credit hours required for graduation
    2. Cluster pilots and Historical Studies proposals well received by Provost
    3. Pass/Fail one GEC course is being proposed
    4. “The Ohio State Plan” – a baseline GEC proposal discussed (see proposal attached at end of minutes):

                                                               i.      Demonstrated Breadth – 3 categories remain the same

ii.      Professional Colleges and B.S. degrees can ask to add back only 2 courses and or target the added back courses differently

iii.      Add back 3 courses for B.A. degrees

iv.      More flexibility is provided if students can substitute ASC minors or a 2nd major

                                                             v.      Dean does not believe Foreign Languages an Historical Study should be a part of proposal

vi.      Concern – lack of advising; Provost recommended faculty help advise, but committee believes the demands on faculty time don’t allow for additional responsibilities

vii.      Discussions of creating more upper division GEC courses for Juniors and Seniors are taking place (see xiv. Below)

viii.      Fundamental concept of GEC is to provide breadth outside of major – question of why a course outside a major that is specific (i.e. Mayan Art for an English major) count? Committee thought this okay in terms of breadth.

ix.      Question of when 3 courses became a full load at OSU; 45 hours per year or 15 hours per quarter X 3) = 180

1.      Students must take extra hours some where to reach current requirements

2.      Given that a) students with AP credit can easily graduate in 4 years with 191/current GEC and b) those without AP credit can take either 2 quarters of 20 hrs each or one summer quarter/term.

                                                             x.      Shift in student needs has happened – less remedial needs and more AP transferred in

xi.      Students want their degree to mean something when they graduate - what affect does a decrease in credit hour requirements have on this?

xii.      Decrease in population 10 years from now – we should be planning now to be sure we will be competitive; consumer philosophy employed now will hurt us in the future

xiii.      Provost expressed concern over low out-of-state student population

xiv.      Substituting upper level courses on an approved list appealing to the committee; this list would come from Honors, which has already approved these upper division substitutes.

xv.      Substituting ASC minor or 2nd major for the “add back” courses in “the Ohio State Plan” generally acceptable to committee

1.      Noted that currently many student pursue minors or 2nd majors, are they harmed by the loss of 5 hours in each subcategory? How much does the reduction diminish the students’ programs?

2.      General feeling that these add breadth, exposure – goals of GEC; students will still achieve some breadth in the base-line GEC

3.      Would all minors be allowed?

4.      Issue of minors double-counting GEC courses would have to be investigated

xvi.      Committee would like to know what the justification for only adding back 2 is

“The Ohio State Plan” For BA Majors [BS might be different …]

A “base” number of courses for the following GEC categories:

Proposal                                                                                              Current GEC

Natural Science:        3 courses (one sequence/lab?)                      4 courses
Social Science:           2 courses (1 from each of 2 areas)                3 courses
Arts & Humanities:   2 courses (1 from each of 2 areas)                3 courses]

Students will then choose either:

3 additional courses from at least 2 of the 3 categories or an ASC Minor or a Double Major (one major in ASC).
