  1. ASC 3 Update – Guests Jay Yutzey and John Wanzer
    1. Permits students to do a dual degree: B.S. Business Administration and B.A./Journalism or B.S. in ASC
    2. Earlier version of sheet didn’t distinguish between BS and BA science requirements
    3. Most students pursuing are in Foreign Languages or Economics, but there is a range across ASC
    4. Students enrolled in both colleges at same time
    5. Increase in interest in combining sciences with Business
    6. Issues of Contemporary World required on BS because FCOB requires it
    7. Concern expressed that ASC 3 does not exist on web – the GEC sheets will be posted with all others, other options will be explored to make more of a presence

NOTE: OAA is currently exploring dual degree options and requirements

  1. University Level Oversight of the GEC – Guest Randy Smith
    1. Many meetings were held over the summer – oversight is a very important issue to non-ASC Colleges
    2. Proposal – see attached draft below

                                                               i.            Committee would not review course proposals

ii.            Structure would be tried for one year, and then reviewed/fine-tuned as needed

    1. Concern over name of committee expressed – Oversight leaves impression of mandates

                                                               i.            Discussion of adding “assessment” to name

ii.            Committee would advise, not dictate – put “advisory” in name

    1. Concern that members of CCI Sub E might be overwhelmed with work

                                                               i.            OAA will research how they can provide support

ii.            Charge will be folded out slowly

    1. Question of whether it might be more effective to have the committee do an annual review/report of GEC as a whole as opposed to details

                                                               i.            Concern over whether that would accomplish what non-ASC Colleges desire/need expressed

ii.            It is important for ASC to hear how Professional Colleges’ professions are changing and how it affects their needs

iii.            Suggestion to change charge language to reflect advisory role and ensure reports get back to CCI

iv.            Recommended that committee start with agenda setting, and allow that to guide assessment gathering

  1. Assessment Process Update – Guest Alexis Collier
    1. Working to embed assessment into curricular process
    2. Sub E to establish clear requirements for review of GEC courses
    3. Major Reports – distributed summaries for each college report
    4. Redevelopment of website – more information is available on intranet http://ascnet.osu.edu
  2. Use of Minors—proposal for requiring minors in B.A. programs
    1. Proposal provided by Bill Childs, based on BA template

                                                               i.            Language will be changed regarding student petitions so that it does not come across like a PSP

ii.            25% of graduates last spring had minors

iii.            Question of how many double-majors there are – estimated 500-600, numbers available on intranet

iv.            Question of if there will be a limit to how many courses overlap with GEC

                                                             v.            Question of how requiring minors might affect students who do not know what they want to study

vi.            Exploring, Redeciding and Transfer students need to be taken care of separately

vii.            Hope is that the requirement will help student focus, not attempt to slow students up

viii.            Designed to get students to talk to faculty about their passions/interests

ix.            Question of what is wrong with allowing students to take courses in various departments without requiring structure

    1. Conversation will continue at next meeting

                                                               i.            Members asked to discuss proposal in their departments/colleges and send thoughts to Bill and Ed
