Update on revisions to the Bio Sci Major - Caroline Breitenberger

  1. Curricular Proposals
    1. Econ 348 – new course request - Approved

                                                               i.      Consider adding Econ 200 or 201 as prerequisites to allow counting in Econ minor

    1. Food Science & Technology 597.02 – new course request – Approved with Contingencies

                                                               i.      No evidence that a 597.01 exists, need to create generic

                                                             ii.      Assessment plan – elaborate on how comparison of papers will be used, what particularly will be compared, and how will the information be used when collected?

                                                            iii.      Syllabus needs to clearly state goals of this GEC category

    1. Statistics Minor Revision – sent back

                                                               i.      Can students substitute 427 & 428 for 420 & 421?

1.      understood that this would have credit hour implications and likely require additional course work for these students

2.      Can minor courses count on Master’s degree? Implied in B- statement

3.      529 has pre-req of 528 or equivalent, is that a defacto pre-req for the minor?

4.      Confusion over whether 529 & 530 or 528 & 529 are required sequence

5.      Clarify pre-requisites for electives

6.      Needs whole packet of course change forms to reflect changes

    1. Public Health Minor Proposal – Approved
    2. Biology Major revision

                                                               i.      Caroline provided background and information so that committee is aware of context when proposal is submitted Winter quarter

                                                             ii.      Problems with current major:

1.      students can chose a really easy path in specialization area by finding 3 lowest level courses possible

2.      core – a lot of courses overlap information because they have no particular order requirement

                                                            iii.      Committee in Biological Sciences has reviewed major and suggested that a new layer of courses be created to give students a better foundation and eliminate overlap in courses
