i. Concern that the major currently is not rigorous enough. Department looked at what institutions around the country are doing and the America Sociology Association recommendations
ii. Adding Soc 463 to required courses and 5 hours integrated elective
iii. 45 hours will become 55 required hours
iv. Most soc majors go into business and government work
v. Is data analysis embedded in major? Soc 549 covers this
vi. Recommended that percent of hours to degree be added to benchmark list
vii. Are there enough internships available? Yes and there is an internship coordinator.
viii. Does ASA recommend Soc Statistics course? Do peers? How is increase in requirements making the major stronger? 463 is upper-level course that better prepares students for other upper-level courses. Recommended that these points be included in proposal.
ix. Integrative Elective – proposal should have an explanation about research preparing students for grad school
x. Recommended that planning sheet be changed to be closer to 183 hours to degree. Noted that the plan contains 2 minors.

i. Soc 410 required
ii. Title change to Criminal and Crime Justice Studies
iii. Reflects the large portion of Criminology Justice courses offered and that some Crim Justice programs offer many courses that we don’t offer
iv. Noted that there is only 1 course really different between Soc and Crim majors- advising plays a big role
