Comments forwarded to Film Studies 1/27/09:

1) the revised Course Form -- they removed the indication of the quarter they wanted this to be effective, but left the indication that the course would/could be offered AU, WI, or SP.  The subcommittee's recommendation was to NOT list the "quarters of offering" in the Course Offerings Bulletin, so that students don't expect 695 to be offered every quarter.  I think they do need to leave in the quarter when they want this new course request to be effective.

2) the Davidson syllabus -- the subcommittee's concern was that a student might not have enough information about his/her status in the course at the end of the 7th week of the quarter to make an informed decision about whether to drop the course or not (the deadline for a drop without a petition is the end of the 7th week).  It's still not clear, from the points distribution and the deadlines on the revised syllabus, that students will have this information at the end of the 7th week.  It appears that 25-30% of the students won't have given their class presentations by the end of the 7th week, so at least some part of the class won't have that grade information by the end of the 7th week.  The paper proposal is now worth more points, but is due -- apparently -- in the middle of the 7th week; as a result, it's not clear that the grades for the proposals will be available until after the 7th week.  As a result, I'd encourage the instructor to meet the subcommittee's expectations by adjusting due dates and/or the values of assignments so that all students know at least 40% of their final grade before the end of the 7th week.

3) the Mizejewski syllabus -- all revisions requested have been made.  This looks OK as revised.

Contingency Contingencies sent to B Hauser 1/9/09 res

1. qtr offered should be omitted from Book 3 so that students do not complain if it is not offered every quarter

     a. War (Davidson)

            1. Committee asks that due to university policies, too large amount of grade is devoted to 1 paper especially so late in qtr

            2. perhaps paper proposal a bit earlier (to provide feedback earlier in qtr)

             3. attendance should be 1-third of a grade such as A to A-(or 5% pts) rather than 1-half which would be A to B+
    b. Film Bodies (Mizejewski)
           1. due date for papers not included
