Interdisc Subcom approved with contingencies 4/29/09; J Mercerhill to contact proposer with suggested changes res:

  • Remove Graduate course; allowing this to be a U with grad students by permission
  • Remove ambiguity in p.3- last sentence in italics- "the instructor" in assigning grades
  • Typo p.7- I-3: ethnic to ethics
  • Where are the readings available?
  • Suggestion: Some quick communication by the supervisor (perhaps a phone call, email-- something formalized) to the workplace asking is the organization benefitting from working with the student?

Interdisc Subcom Sent Back 3/12/09 emailed to J Mercerhill 3/13/09 res:

  • 50% of grade evaluated by someone not at OSU- perhaps use a phone call or some other means to give feedback, allowing internship director to decide if the behavior is good or egregious.  There is no visit to internship site; but instead a conversation is held with the internship facilitator; how is the grade derived? Does the student’s self-evaluation count towards the grade?  Does instructor just take them under consideration?  The evaluation form has some good parts and there is some grading; feedback is important but to have someone outside of OSU to “grade” them as an employer or internship provider is questionable.  Recommend that they not use this as a grade, but instead incorporate feedback from this provider to help decide the grade.  Recommend looking at other OSU internships.  A 100-level or S/U internship is appropriate for this grading scheme; however for a 500-level internship this is unusual for a class this significant.  What is the difference between a 4 and a 5?
  • If Brenda Brueggeman (course proposer) asks for an alternate format for grading, she can be directed to multiple OSU models; the recommendation would be that this new version of grading be the expected format for the whole shell
  • Contact J Mercerhill: 589 will become a shell, generic “Internship” and this course will be 589.01; titled as a graduate internship, for a GIS, but offers undergrad and grad selection.- will be changed perhaps to include U & G
