CAA approved minutes (bv):

Hobgood presented the proposal. The proposed minor remains at 25 credit hours. Psychology 313 increased from 4 to 5 credit hours and the foundational courses increased from 8 to 9 credit hours. In order to keep the minor at 25 hours, the required credit total in the Advanced Electives category was lowered from 17 to 16 credit hours. The number of hours students can complete using Individual Studies (693) or Undergraduate Research (699) has been lowered from 3-6 hours to 1-3 hours for the minor.

During the discussion, the following issues were raised and clarifications provided.

Some Council members questioned the change in research hours from 3-6 hours to 1-3 hours. They considered research to be an important part of the undergraduate curriculum in Neuroscience minor. It was noted that within the proposal the explanation was: “this research experience is important and valuable, but, there are numerous course options to satisfy the rest of the minor. These ensure a broad-based foundation for minors.”

There were no additional issues from members of the Council.

Hobgood moved approval; it was seconded by Bendapudi; and the motion carried with 8 in favor, 1 abstention and 1 opposed.

* After this minor was approved, the coordinating faculty advisor, Professor John Bruno, requested some modest changes to the electives (see attached email), namely:

·         Remove Psych 644 from elective list because department is not sure when it will be offered again

·         Remove Psych 371H from elective list because he does not feel that this is a neuroscience course, although students completing minor under old advising sheet will still be able to count it toward minor

·         Add Psych 600 (Psychology of Learning) to electives because beginning AU10 this course will be offered regularly by one of the Behavioral Neuroscience faculty

The above changes would normally be considered “updates” and as such require no further vetting by CCI.
