Dear Tony and Fernando,

Subcommittee A of the Arts & Sciences Committee on Curriculum & Instruction met
this morning to consider your new course request for Spanish/International
Studies 640 Globalization and Latin America: Multi-disciplinary Approaches. The
committee was very positive about the course proposal, seeing it as a valuable
and timely addition to the curriculum. Given this, it's my pleasure to let you
know that your course proposal was approved, contingent on some minor
modifications:

a. Please clarify in what way the course is a "gateway course" and where it
fits into major and minor programs.

b. We would ask that you monitor the aggregate cost of the required textbooks.
We're concerned that requiring students to buy six texts may make the course
prohibitively expensive for some students.

c. We would like to encourage you to include learning objectives on the
syllabus. This will not only make course goals more transparent to students but
also, as a reflection of the assessment culture we're now in, hopefully will
make course assessment and improvement more effective.

d. Finally, you may want to consider having an embedded Honors component in the
course.  I've attached a copy of the guidelines, recently approved by CAA. Note
that these are the general guidelines that Honors & Scholars proposed for the
University and that there are additional restrictions for Arts and Sciences
courses.

When convenient, please send me an e-mail regarding the first point along with
an updated syllabus. A copy of the syllabus should also go to Jennifer Lando
(lando.5).  I anticipate that your proposal will be on the agenda of an ASCCI
meeting in the near future. Once approved, it will go to CAA for final
approval.

Let me know if you have any questions.

All the best,
Beth Hume
