Dear Jessica,

Thanks so much for getting back to me after the subcommittee met.  Iam so glad they also think it is a good fit under the Individuals and Groupscategory.  I also really appreciate their interest in the course, and it is a pleasure for me to have someone interested in its design and content!  Thepoints raised are valid ones and I appreciate the opportunity to address them.

1. Concerning the name of ED P&L 411, I understand why the term "Mind" seemsbetter at first blush.  In fact, that word was in the name of the course whenI originally offered it!  But it was purposely changed to "Body, Brain, andLearning" to highlight the current physiological brain research. I want thestudents to be able to pull up the research in stress reduction that showsthat a relaxed brain has all sorts of physiological consequences.  The word "Mind" highlights the psychological approach and this course is really about movement, brain function in education, and the body as an underutilized toolin learning itself.  This is not a course about the psychology of learning.I am careful not to tread where I do not have expertise!  I love teachingabout how it is possible to utilize the body in education.  The "Brain " word is more linked to the actual body, and to the research within this field of education, thus the name for this course, "Brain, Body, and Learning".

2. Regarding the course #, there are not many undergrad courses offered inthe School of Educational Policy and Leadership, as most of the studentswithin this school are Masters level or above.  But there is a cluster ofcourses in the 400# series that are on topics appropriate for theundergraduate student.  ED P&L 411 is on the Body's impact on Education, #'s413, 414, and 415 are on the topics of legal issues, gender, and sexuality asthey impact education.  So it was a conscious choice to place my course at the particular # of 411. These are all 5 hour courses also.  I actually would have preferred a higher # but the school felt this was appropriate for this
course, and in the end, I do too. I want freshman to be able to take thiscourse as a GEC, so I prefer not to have any prerequisites for this course. It is a pleasure to have a mixture of students from all of the undergraduate years in the class because they learn from each other.

3. I am happy to have the Professor in Psychology have his colleagues' check 411 for concurrence.  Barb Anderson is on the  Committee I put together for the proposed minor in "Integrative Approaches in Health and Wellness" which will be voted on next week by CAA.  In fact, this course, ED P&L 411, is a course offered within that proposed minor, so she looked at it last year.

I am happy to answer these questions and any others that might arise!  I love teaching this course and hope that it will soon be able to be a GEC under the category "Individuals and Groups" for the students at OSU.

Thanks for your attention to these details Jessica- again, you are great to work with!
